Codman’s FNP Residency Earns Accreditation, Achieves Other Successes

Codman is proud to announce that our Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Residency program recently earned accreditation from the Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship Accreditation (APPFA) under the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission (ANCC).  Accreditation ensures our program offers an excellent education and that our learners provide excellent care to patients.  Codman’s NP Residency continues to be a success in achieving its mission, to provide community–focused NP graduates with high quality training and mentorship, developing excellent providers of primary care for our patient population.

Codman’s NP Residency launched in 2020, when a few of our existing NPs had the idea to have new family nurse practitioner (FNP) graduates train on the job.  Every time an NP Resident sees a patient, they are precepted by an attending provider for one full year. Additionally, NP Residents have intentional onboarding, didactic time with UMASS, formal evaluations, and mentorship.

This highly competitive program recruits FNP graduates with academic excellence and who are linguistically, culturally, and racially reflective of Codman’s patient population. Since its inception, Codman’s NP Residency has hired 10 FNPs, all with unique skills and contributions to our health center.

Codman’s first two FNP residents, Nnemdi Azubuko and Marta Escriu-Suñé, graduated from the program in the Summer of 2021, and were hired as full-time providers. Both also went on to fill leadership roles at Codman. We are so happy that they are still with us today!

Florence Okonkwo and Tatiana Lucien graduated in 2023 and were hired as permanent staff Nurse Practitioners.  Cindy Benavides and Cathyana Jean-Baptiste will graduate in September 2024 and go on to fill much needed roles in Primary Care, Urgent Care, X-Clinic, Randolph Clinic, and Substance Use.
