William J. Walczak Health and Education Center

The William J. Walczak Health and Education Center was funded primarily through a $7.95 million dollar Capital Development Program Grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The facility is a 32,000 square foot Gold LEED certified green expansion integrated into Health Center’s previous building. This space allowed the Health Center to expand clinical programs, and also added space for educational and social programs.

This expansion allowed further development of the Codman┬▓ partnership between Codman Square Health Center and the Codman Academy Foundation, which supports the Codman Academy Charter Public School, and increasing the space for more internships for Codman Academy students in the Health Center and training for students to be “Health Ambassadors” to their families and communities.

Features include:

  • 22 new exam rooms allowing for 5,300 new patients
  • 6 new mammography/radiology facilities
  • 13 new health care provider offices
  • 3 new group medical visit rooms, used for our Centering programs
  • New dining hall, the Codman Cafe, with a large teaching kitchen
  • Black Box Theatre
  • 10 classrooms including 2 science labs for Codman Academy
  • Library

The William J. Walczak Health and Education Center was named after Bill Walczak, co-founder of both Codman Square Health Center and Codman Academy Charter Public School. Walczak’s additional experience includes being the founding President of the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network, President of job-training network STRIVE, a Senior Fellow at the Boston University Institute for Nonprofit Management and Leadership, a Barr Foundation Fellow, and a board member of the Massachusetts Business Alliance for Education, Advisory Board of the Boston Landmarks Orchestra, and the Advisory Council of the Haiti Fund at the Boston Foundation, among others.

The William J. Walczak Health and Education Center broke ground in October 2011. Construction was completed in September 2012. The official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony dedicating the building took place in March 2013. The Center was awarded the International Facility Management Association's Award of Excellence in June 2013.
