National Women’s Health Week
“Women have guided our country toward prosperity and progress, and our Nation’s success depends on their well-being. While women often play a leading role in making medical decisions for their families, their own health care needs have too often gone unmet. During National Women’s Health Week, we recommit to making health care more accessible and affordable for women across our country” (White House, May 14, 2012).
We are proud to be on the front lines of providing healthcare to women in Dorchester, with 60% of our active patient base being female. In addition to our many health services for women (mammography, OB/GYN, prenatal, partnership with Healthworks Community Fitness, parenting & pregnancy Centering groups), we also have an annual fundraiser that supports women’s health programs in Dorchester: Men of Boston Cook for Women’s Health. Save the date for the 15th anniversary of annual fundraiser on September 27th, 2012.
Eastern Bank Quarterback Award
Codman Square Health Center was the recent recipient of Eastern Bank Foundation’s Community Quarterback Award. The Award, a first for Codman, is for organizations that are leaders in providing basic human services, and included a $10,000 grant for the building addition. Tony Stankiewicz received the award from Eastern Bank spokesperson and Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie and Chairman and CEO Richard Holbrook at Monday’s event at Cambridge College (pictured).
Dr. Matthew Horan awarded Ten Under 10 Award from MDS
Every year the Massachusetts Dental Society selects ten new dentists who are making a significant contribution to the profession, their community or organized dentistry. Dr. Matthew Horan, the Dental Director here at Codman, is a recipient of the Ten Under 10 award this year.
When asked what made him choose to practice at Codman, Dr. Horan responded, “When I started [at Codman], I thought, I will just finish these two years, and it’s straight to private practice to pay those school loans. But, to my surprise, the health center environment wasn’t at all what I expected. The patients were exceptionally appreciative and there was a general feeling of doing good things for the community. I grew attached to the patients and staff along with having access to primary care doctors and specialists, with a focus more on overall health. Before I knew it, my two-year service obligation was up, and I wanted to stay.”
We are proud to have such wonderful providers like Dr. Horan to be a part of creating a culture of health in Dorchester!

Partners with Nonprofits Awards CSHC Grant
Mayor Menino presented the Codman Square Health Center (CSHC) with a $10,000 grant through the Partners with Non-Profits (PNP) award program on Thursday, February 9, 2012. PNP is a program of the City of Boston that supports Boston neighborhoods through an investment in the non-profit organizations that are operating within those neighborhoods. The grants provide necessary funding for capital improvement projects.
The $10,000 grant received will be used to help make necessary roofing repairs to the Health Center facilities.
